Ecuador Stuns Germany to Reach FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage

Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 in their final Group E match on Thursday. The victory secured Ecuador’s place in the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.  

Germany took an early lead, but Ecuador responded with goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata, completing a memorable comeback. The result sparked celebrations among Ecuadorian supporters, with head coach Sebastián Beccacece describing it as one of the nation’s greatest World Cup victories.
