Spain are the new FIFA World Cup champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a dramatic final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The match remained goalless through 90 minutes despite Spain creating the better chances. Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in normal time, leaving the holders to play extra time with 10 men.
Spain finally found the breakthrough in the 106th minute, when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal to secure the nation’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their historic triumph in 2010.
The victory capped an impressive tournament for Spain, while Argentina fell just short of defending the title they won in Qatar in 2022. The final brought the curtain down on the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
