Portugal last night snatched a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, thanks to a dramatic header from Rúben Neves in first-minute stoppage time.
The contest had looked destined for a stalemate, as Ireland defended resolutely and Portugal squandered chances throughout. Their frustration peaked when Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty in the 75th minute was superbly kept out by Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.
However, deep into added time, Neves rose to meet Francisco Trincão’s cross, heading the ball past Kelleher and sending the home crowd into ecstasy. It was Neves’ first international goal in 60 appearances and a poignant moment, as he wore the No. 21 jersey in honour of his late friend Diogo Jota.
With the win, Portugal remain perfect in qualifying, sitting on nine points and holding a five-point lead over Hungary, whom they host next in a potential title decider. Meanwhile, Ireland must regroup quickly they lie bottom of the group with just one point and face an uphill battle to stay in contention.
