France Engulfed in Protests and Civil Unrest

France is experiencing a wave of nationwide demonstrations as protesters call for President Emmanuel Macron’s resignation. Operating under the banner “Block Everything,” thousands have taken to the streets, occupying roads, railways, and fuel stations, causing widespread disruption. Security forces responded with tear gas and mass arrests as tensions escalated.

Authorities revealed that over 80,000 police and paramilitary officers have been deployed in what is being described as the largest security mobilisation since the Yellow Vest movement of 2018.

What started as protests among right-wing groups during the summer has since grown, with left-wing organizations, labor unions, and student movements joining in. The unrest intensified after Macron’s government lost a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly, triggered by backlash against controversial budget cut proposals.

Former Prime Minister François Bayrou’s recommendations including eliminating public holidays, freezing pensions until 2026, and slashing healthcare spending by more than $50 billion ignited outrage across the country.

Major cities such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Toulouse have seen blocked roads and disrupted logistics, including Amazon depots. In Rennes, a bus was torched and rail services were thrown into chaos after power lines were burned. Officials confirmed that barricades were established in more than 700 locations nationwide.

Amid the turmoil, President Macron appointed Sébastien Lecornu as France’s fifth prime minister in just two days. Lecornu has pledged to open dialogue with political parties and pursue reforms in an effort to calm the crisis.
