The Royal Navy has confirmed that one of its patrol vessels intercepted a Russian warship and an accompanying tanker as they travelled through the English Channel, amid a noticeable rise in Russian naval activity around the United Kingdom.
According to defence officials, the Russian corvette Stoikiy and the fleet tanker Yelnya were closely monitored as they passed through one of the world’s busiest and most strategically significant waterways. Royal Navy sailors shadowed the vessels throughout their transit to ensure maritime safety and maintain awareness of foreign military movements near UK waters.
The interception forms part of routine operations carried out by the Royal Navy to safeguard national interests and uphold international maritime security. Over the past two years, the UK has reported a significant increase in the number of Russian military ships sailing close to its territory, reflecting ongoing tensions between Russia and Western nations.
Defence sources noted that the monitoring operation was conducted professionally and in accordance with international law, which permits foreign vessels to pass through the Channel under the principle of innocent passage. However, the growing frequency of such encounters has prompted heightened vigilance from UK maritime forces.
The Ministry of Defence emphasised that the UK will continue to maintain a strong presence in the Channel and surrounding seas to deter threats and respond swiftly to unusual or potentially hostile activity.
