Mauritania Migrant Boat Tragedy: 49 Dead, Over 100 Missing

Nouakchott (Agencies):
A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Mauritania this week, leaving at least 49 people dead and more than 100 others missing, according to officials. The Mauritanian coast guard confirmed that 17 survivors were rescued, while search operations are ongoing to locate the remaining passengers.

The ill-fated vessel, carrying around 160 people, had reportedly set sail from Gambia nearly a week ago, with migrants mostly from Gambia and Senegal. The boat overturned near Mheijrat, after passengers rushed to one side upon spotting coastal lights, causing it to lose balance and sink.

Authorities have recovered dozens of bodies and continue their efforts despite difficult sea conditions. International humanitarian groups have expressed deep concern, calling the incident a stark reminder of the dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous sea crossings in search of better opportunities.

This tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to address irregular migration and ensure safer alternatives for vulnerable populations.
