UK Formally Recognises State of Palestine in Historic Move

In a landmark decision, the United Kingdom has officially recognised the State of Palestine, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing the recognition on 21 September 2025. The move marks a significant shift in British foreign policy and places the UK among the growing number of nations that have extended formal recognition to Palestine.

Speaking from Downing Street, Prime Minister Starmer said the decision was taken in line with the UK’s commitment to supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He described the recognition as a “necessary step towards peace, justice, and stability in the region.”

The recognition follows decades of debate within British politics, where successive governments had voiced support for Palestinian self-determination but stopped short of formal recognition. The Labour government, elected earlier this year, had pledged during its campaign to take concrete steps toward a two-state solution.

The Foreign Secretary emphasised that recognition of Palestine does not undermine Israel’s right to security but instead strengthens efforts to achieve lasting peace. “The UK recognises the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and reaffirms its unwavering support for Israel’s security,” the statement read.

Reaction to the announcement has been swift. Palestinian leaders welcomed the recognition as a “historic act of solidarity,” while Israel expressed concern, warning that premature recognition could complicate negotiations. Meanwhile, international observers say the UK’s decision could influence other European countries still weighing their position.

The UK now joins over 140 United Nations member states that have recognised Palestine as a state. Analysts suggest the move may also reshape Britain’s role in Middle East diplomacy, potentially giving it greater influence in future peace talks.

As the international community reacts, the recognition is being hailed as a bold diplomatic milestone one that could redefine the path toward resolving one of the world’s most enduring conflicts.
