Israel Opens Fire Despite Ceasefire, Killing at Least Five Palestinians

In a troubling escalation just days after a U.S. brokered ceasefire took effect, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) opened fire on Palestinians in eastern Gaza City, killing at least five people.

According to the IDF, the victims had crossed the “yellow line” a boundary designated for withdrawal under the ceasefire agreement and approached troops deployed nearby. After multiple warnings and attempts to disperse the group, soldiers fired to “remove the threat,” Israeli officials said.

Palestinian health authorities disputed the Israeli account, saying the men were inside the designated safe zone when they were shot.

The incident marks one of the first major breaches of the newly declared pause in hostilities, raising serious doubts about the ceasefire’s durability.

In parallel, Hamas forces have been rapidly reasserting control over Gaza, executing individuals accused of collaborating with Israel, and stepping into public security roles.

International observers and aid agencies have warned that even isolated outbreaks of violence could unravel fragile advances toward peace.
