Thailand and Cambodia Agree Immediate Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate ceasefire, halting weeks of intense fighting along their disputed border, officials said on Saturday.

The truce took effect at midday local time on December 27, following talks between senior military and defense officials from both countries. Under the agreement, both sides committed to stopping hostilities, holding current troop positions, and avoiding actions that could escalate tensions.

The recent clashes involved artillery fire, rocket attacks, and air operations, leaving more than 100 people dead and forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee border areas. Fighting had continued intermittently even as diplomatic negotiations were underway, highlighting the fragility of earlier attempts to calm the conflict.

Regional actors, including members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), are expected to help monitor the ceasefire, while further diplomatic discussions are planned to prevent a renewed outbreak of violence.

Officials from both governments stressed that the dispute concerns unresolved border demarcations and does not reflect hostility between the Thai and Cambodian people, expressing cautious hope that the ceasefire will hold and lead to longer-term stability.
