The United Kingdom has raised its national terrorism threat level from “Substantial” to “Severe,” meaning an attack is now considered highly likely, according to an official update from security authorities.
The decision was made by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), part of MI5, following a recent violent incident in Golders Green, London, along with a broader assessment of increasing threats. Officials indicated that the change reflects not just a single incident, but a heightened overall risk from multiple sources, including extremist groups and other security concerns.
The previous threat level, “Substantial,” had been in place since 2022. The move to “Severe” signals a significant shift in the UK’s security posture, prompting increased vigilance from law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Government officials have urged the public to remain calm but alert, continuing to follow the “See it, Say it, Sorted” guidance by reporting any suspicious activity.
Despite the raised threat level, authorities emphasise that people should continue their daily activities as normal while staying aware of their surroundings.
