Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup has raised eyebrows among cricket followers. Despite being in excellent form, the batter was not included in the main squad, nor among the reserve players.
Cricket experts have expressed surprise at the decision, calling it hard to justify given Iyer’s recent performances. Concerns were raised about the practice of rewarding players in one format on the basis of achievements in another, which some critics believe goes against sound selection principles.
Observers highlighted how Iyer demonstrated his class earlier this year in a home series, followed by an outstanding campaign in the domestic T20 league. Returning with renewed determination, he impressed with his consistency and form, showing maturity and skill in crucial innings.
Iyer’s leadership in the 2025 T20 season was also remarkable, guiding his team to their first final in over a decade. He amassed more than 600 runs in 17 matches, averaging above 50 with a strike rate exceeding 170 — numbers that stood out among the best in the tournament.
Critics argue that overlooking a player with such proven T20 credentials, especially after excelling in the very format being selected for, sends the wrong message. Some believe that players shining in other formats are being prioritized at the expense of those who have delivered consistently in limited-overs cricket.
While India remains a strong contender and enters the Asia Cup as defending champions, many feel that leaving Iyer out was unfair and that he deserved a place in the squad.
India begins their Asia Cup 2025 campaign in Dubai on September 10 against the UAE, followed by group-stage clashes with Oman and Pakistan.
