Pakistan and Saudi Arabia Sign Historic Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement

In a landmark development, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have signed the Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA), underscoring the depth of their strategic partnership and reaffirming their longstanding defense cooperation. The agreement was signed in Riyadh by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, reflecting its historic importance.

The SMDA stipulates that any external armed aggression against one country will be considered an attack against both, thereby institutionalising a joint defense framework. The pact aims to bolster military preparedness, enhance interoperability, and strengthen the defense capabilities of both nations to counter existing and future security challenges while safeguarding their sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The signing of the agreement marks a milestone in bilateral relations, building on decades of cooperation in joint military training, multilateral exercises, and defense industry collaboration. Pakistan has thus become a formal partner in safeguarding the holy sites of Makkah and Madinah, reaffirming the shared religious, cultural, and strategic bonds between the two nations.

Officials highlighted the pivotal role of Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, in facilitating the agreement, which is expected to further reinforce regional peace, stability, and security while also creating avenues for broader economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two brotherly states.
