Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92

Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic voices in Bollywood history, passed away on April 12, 2026, at the age of 92. Her death has marked the end of an extraordinary musical era that spanned over eight decades. 

Bhosle died at a hospital in Mumbai after suffering from exhaustion, a chest infection, and multiple organ failure, according to medical sources. 

Widely celebrated for her versatility, Bhosle recorded more than 11,000–12,000 songs in multiple languages and genres, ranging from classical and ghazals to pop and cabaret-style Bollywood hits.  Her career, which began in the 1940s, made her one of the most influential and prolific singers in Indian cinema. 

Her passing triggered an outpouring of grief from across India and the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, musicians like A.R. Rahman, and numerous Bollywood celebrities paid tribute, praising her “timeless brilliance” and lasting contribution to music. 

Bhosle’s last rites were performed with full state honours in Mumbai on April 13, attended by prominent figures from the film, music, and political spheres. 

Born in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, Asha Bhosle overcame personal and professional struggles to become a global musical icon. Over her lifetime, she received numerous accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour. 

Her voice, immortalised in timeless songs, continues to resonate with generations of listeners worldwide, ensuring that her legacy will endure far beyond her passing.
