In a dramatic political development, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has resigned after confirming she failed to pay the full amount of tax owed on a recent property purchase.
The resignation comes just hours after an independent inquiry concluded that Rayner had underpaid stamp duty a tax levied on property transactions when purchasing an £800,000 London flat. Although the inquiry stopped short of declaring her actions deliberate, it found that she had fallen short of the high standards expected of government ministers.
In a statement, Rayner admitted to the error and accepted responsibility:
