England defeated New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test at Lord’s, taking a 1–0 lead in the three-match series after a low-scoring and weather-disrupted contest.
New Zealand were bowled out for 138 in their second innings while chasing a target of 254. England’s bowlers maintained control throughout the final day, with Gus Atkinson taking a five-wicket haul to help wrap up the match before lunch on day four.
The match was heavily influenced by difficult and unpredictable pitch conditions, combined with interruptions from rain across the first three days. Both teams struggled to build sustained batting partnerships, with frequent wickets falling throughout the game.
England had earlier posted 140 in their first innings, before dismissing New Zealand for 113 to take a narrow lead. A second-innings effort allowed them to set a challenging target that proved out of reach for the tourists.
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) acknowledged issues with the playing surface, saying it did not meet expected standards for the venue.
The second Test will be played at The Oval on 17 June.
