Webster determined to secure Ashes spot

After a promising start to his Test career—with four fifties in seven matches, many on challenging surfaces—the tall all-rounder is aware that nothing is guaranteed.

“At the highest level, you’re constantly fighting to keep your place,” Webster, who recently completed a county stint following the West Indies Tests, told reporters in Hobart when discussing his ambitions for the Ashes squad.

The Tasmanian international acknowledges that Cameron Green, who impressed at No.3 after returning from injury, is likely to resume bowling, which could put Webster’s lower middle-order spot under greater scrutiny.

“With so many talented players in the country, especially someone like Cameron Green—he batted at the top in the West Indies and didn’t bowl—he’ll be back with the ball this summer. That adds some pressure on my position at No.6 as an all-rounder, but I welcome the challenge.”

While Marnus Labuschagne has emerged as a candidate to open for Australia, selectors could potentially fit him into the side alongside specialist openers if Green’s bowling returns prove strong.

Despite the added competition, Webster is ready to prove his worth once more in domestic red-ball cricket.

“I’ve been in this situation many times before,” Webster said. “I need to score runs to either reach the next level or maintain my spot. It’s not new to me. I’m looking forward to showcasing my game in the Sheffield Shield and hopefully earning a place for the first Ashes Test in Perth. It’s going to be a huge summer, and while the team might rotate across the five Tests, I’ll do everything I can to be part of all of them.”

Webster will have four Shield matches to make a strong case for Australia to select two all-rounders for the upcoming Ashes.

He remains confident in his ability to succeed if chosen.

“I’ve scored some challenging runs, but I don’t yet have a hundred, which I’d like to build on from one of those fifties. I feel my batting has been at a high level in several innings, and I believe I have all the tools to perform well this summer against England.”

The Ashes series begins on 21 November and will count toward the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27.
