Maria Corina Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for Championing Democracy in Venezuela

Oslo, Norway — The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado will receive the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, honoring her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”

Machado, a longtime advocate for democracy and human rights, has been a leading voice against authoritarian rule in her country. The committee praised her courage and unwavering commitment to peaceful political reform, despite years of persecution and political repression.

In a statement, the Nobel Committee highlighted that her efforts “inspired millions of Venezuelans to continue striving for freedom, dignity, and democratic governance.”

Machado is the first Venezuelan to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, marking a historic moment for a nation that has faced severe political and economic challenges in recent years. The award will be formally presented at a ceremony in Oslo in December.
